Legionella Risk Assessment Review

Do I need a Legionella risk assessment review?

  • A Legionella risk assessment is a live document, which should be kept up to date.
  • In order to comply with British Standard 8580:2010 and ACoP L8, risk assessments should be reviewed regularly.
  • A Legionella risk assessment needs to be reviewed once every two years or if any of the following changes are implemented:
    • A change to your water system or water source
    • An alteration in the use of the building where the water system is housed
    • New or updated information on standards for risk and control measures is released
    • A change in the management of Legionella risk control measures
    • When construction work is expected to be carried out on the building

"An appraisal of the current risk assessment, together with the logbook or other records, e.g. monitoring records, should be carried out to determine whether the system is under control and is continuing to be adequately managed."
BS8580:2010; paragraph6.1.

What does a Legionella risk assessment review involve?

In comparison to a building's first full risk assessment, a review is a comprehensive overview of this existing information to ensure it is up to date and control measures are effective.

This provides clients with a extremely cost effective way of meeting the requirements of ACoP L8 and protecting your employees and the public for the risks of Legionella.

A qualified Legionella risk assessor will attend your site and review your current Legionella risk assessment, monitoring records and any other control measure data.

This focuses on:

  • An audit of the current risk assessment, control regime and monitoring records
  • New record of results against control regime and appraisal against risks
  • The risks which were first identified and how these have changed over time
  • Any adverse results and recorded responses since the last assessment
  • An audit of your maintenance and testing records
  • Check of any on site test apparatus against calibrated equipment
  • A review of management responsibilities, training records and competency levels
  • An assessment of any changes to your water system by comparing existing schematics to a building survey

Following the site visit, the risk assessment review is typed up and issued to you electronically and/or in hardcopy depending on your requirements.
